Making a Difference with a Gift of Life Insurance
The United Nations Women recently warned that alongside the Covid-19 pandemic, women around the world have suffered a “shadow pandemic” of domestic violence. This is no surprise to Abundance Canada client Christine Kampen, whose early career experience counselling women at a sexual assault centre in Saskatoon and at a transition house for battered women in Abbotsford brought her face to face with women in need of support as they worked through these exceedingly difficult circumstances.
The people Christine encountered inspired a lasting commitment to help women and children thrive. “The empowerment of women is a real focus and passion for my giving,” she says.
Maximizing Her Impact
Christine had always wanted to make a difference. As a young woman, she volunteered with a variety of local charities and gave what she could to support them financially. However, in her early thirties, she decided she wanted to do more. “I felt like I wanted my money to have the maximum impact in the world, even when I’m not here anymore.”
A planner by nature, she met with an Abundance Canada gift planning consultant and decided that a gift of life insurance would allow her to achieve her philanthropic goals.
Christine purchased a new life insurance policy and donated it to Abundance Canada. She chose to continue making regular premium payments. This gifting option allowed her to receive a charitable receipt for the premium payment while ensuring a larger future gift to support her favourite charities. She explains, “It can be quite a long-delayed gift, but there is also so much more impact than there is with only giving the credit-card gift. This is one way to get a lot more bang for your buck”.
The Joy of Making a Difference
Christine’s gift of life insurance is part of her customized Generosity Plan™ designed to help support her favourite charities at every stage of life. She explains, “Agencies need to have money today and people need money today, so [I] wouldn’t want everything to be tied up in a life insurance gift, but I think those longer-term gifts will allow you to give so much more in the long run.”
“Giving is not an obligation,” says Christine. “It’s really a privilege and a joy.”
With every premium payment Christine makes on her donated life insurance policy, she takes great pleasure knowing her gift will support a variety of charities that champion education access, improve wellness, and foster leadership skills for women throughout the world and in her local community.
“I only have one life, and I want it to make as much difference as it can.”
